Do expats have to pay Traffic Tickets?

Asking for a friend ;)
Expat makes a wrong u-turn.
They are caught by the traffic popo.
Sweet-talking happens.
They are issued a green traffic ticket / moving violation.

Their name is spelled wrong and the passport number is entered incorrectly, but the license plate is correct and it is a rental car.

Did the officer give them a break?

What will happen if the person doesn’t pay?

Bottom line question is - Is the license plate tracked and the rental company informed of the ticket... since it cannot be assigned to a person (because the passport number is wrong)?

Oh, boy.

Reminds me of a traffic ticket I got in Prague about 14 years ago.  The cop was fishing for a "pay at the car" donation, but I just plain didn't have ANY cash of any type, and he/I neither spoke more than a couple words of the other's language.
>>  The cop was exceedingly frustrated I didn't "get" his hints about on-the-scene payments.  I got them alright, I just plain didn't have any currency of any type!!

I got back to Germany (my assignment then), and honestly, I did try to pay that ticket.  But none of the banks did Czech currency, the ticket said mail payments have to be made in Kroner (IIRC the Czech currency correctly) and nothing else, and no checks, money orders were out because they weren't in Czech kroners!!!

After trying diligently for three weeks, I just plain gave up.  I was PCSing back stateside six months later, and I figured they could come find me in the USA if they really wanted me to pay that ticket.

Now, the Czech Republic is part of the European Union, so they're all on the Euro, right?  If I ever get back to that part of the world, maybe I can try to do a good faith effort to pay it.

Or...maybe not.   I have this deep-seated fear that I walk into a police station to pay the old traffic ticket, only to find that my failure to pay caused multiple warrants to be sworn out for my arrest...and off to prison I go.

Maybe I'll just go visit Slovakia, instead.

Haha good story!

I wonder if the Dominican DOT will track ppl by license plate.  Seems like a lot of work.

If you have a Domincan drivers license and your information on the ticket was correct then you may have to pay when you renew your license. Otherwise, no. The few times I have been stopped by AMET, I play stupid and ask if I can pay now. A few hundred pesos and I'm on my way. I have tinted windows now and they can't see the blanco gringo inside the vehicle so I don't get stopped anymore.

When we were there in January, we were pulled over between Santo Domingo and Dominicus for speeding.  We were going about 8 mph over.  They were pulling over a lot of people.  We were on our way to the airport in Punta Cana.  They said we would have to appear in court in Santo Domingo.  We told the officer we were on our way to the airport to fly home.  We asked if we could pay our ticket now.  He said yes and he said it was about $87.  We said no and gave him $20
