Dear Dennis,

Welcome to the Ecuador forums of expat.com ...

There is no one "tip" that will get it all done for you.

Arriving Expats learn about a wide variety of subjects essential to their well-being and success at living in Ecuador.  There are variables involved -- in which city the Expat chooses to live, what kind of abode, who is in the Expat family or party, the Expat budget, proximity to healthcare/beaches/entertainment etc.

An important thing is to figure out how to get into the country to stay -- the entry and the visa process.  The situation has been complicated at times due to covid restrictions since last year.  A state of emergency imposed by el presidente has been curtailed as of early today.  However, some covid restrictions on arriving travelers still apply.

Arrivals from most countries can stay in Ecuador at least 90 days on a tourist stamp, historically renewable for more time.  A passport with plenty of time left in its validity is typically required.

Visa stays may follow, based on an Expat's income, education, purpose for staying on .. or investments.  You can read myriad posts, on this topic alone, at expat.com ... Go to the forum welcome page for Ecuador and type in a subtopic (for instance, visas) in the searchbox, to gain access to numerous threads discussing the matter.

Consider coming back to us with specific questions .. and-or hire a specialist who assists Expats in navigating the visa process.

I came across Parts 1, 2 and 3 of a relevant YouTube series by the Gran Colombia site's Loren Lowe, a philosophical USA Expat.  The series is titled "How to Be(come) an Expat."

Lowe (rhymes with cow) -- previously residing in Cuenca, Ecuador -- is now hosting his videos from his apartment in Armenia, Colombia.

He addresses why Expats come to South America .. why many leave within a year .. why Expats should not buy property for a residence in the early year(s) .. why a car is not necessary for many Expats .. and many other issues.

In the past five years Loren Lowe has produced YouTube videos on South American visas among his many topics, although most of the videos are not under the rubric How to Be an Expat.  His videos generally come under the general title of Gran Colombia (an area that centuries ago included what became modern-day Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela).
