Hey Julien -

This sounds like a good idea, but I'd also recommend that expats in NYC use Yelp (http://www.yelp.com/nyc) to find restaurants/bars/services that have been rated by other users. Granted, Yelp is obviously not expat-specific, but it's still a great resource for exploring a city like New York.
