Quarantine facilities in Pudong District Shanghai

Hi, I am traveling from Spain to Shanghai next week and I wanted to know about the food in quarantine facilities. I am vegetarian and I am bit worried about my 14 days stay.

Will I be able to order food from outside? Can anyone share the whole experience please?

Thank you very much.

Regards,
Vishwas

Well, there is really no way to tell really.

I flew into Shanghai in October.  All of us passengers on our flight who were from outside the Shanghai area got together in the waiting area before boarding and joined the same WeChat group so that we could talk to each other during the quarantine.  There were like 70 of us.  Most were Chinese some local some from abroad but there were a few of us non-Chinese also.

After arriving in Shanghai we were split up to quarantine in 4 different hotels. I was in the group at the Crown Plaza Shanghai Pudong.  At this hotel EVEN THOUGH THE GOVERNMENT WAS SAID TO ALLOW IT, we were NOT allowed to order food from outside at all.  Not food delivery or ordering anything we might be able to prepare ourselves.  Other people in the other hotels had mixed rules.  Some could order food from a selection, some could order limited delivery.  All completely unfair considering the government rules were less strict.

The food that was at my hotel was some of the worst I have ever had. 90% of what they gave me I left out for the trash. They gave me two small bottles of water and one cup of instant noodles on arrival.  Those two bottles were all the water they would give.  I asked for more and they said I could buy it from them.  I asked for a few bottles and they said no, you have to buy A CASE!  I ran out again two days before the end of quarantine and still could not buy just a couple of bottles. Had to buy a whole nother case! Ridiculous!

Luckily, at the beginning of week 2, I did manage to get away with ordering a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread from Taobao and they let it through the gauntlet. No knife, I had to spread the peanut butter with a flimsy plastic spoon.  It was an absolutely horrible experience.  But after a week of hunger it those peanutbutter sandwiches tasted great.

Then a friend of mine arrived in a city near Guangzhou and where he quarantined they gave him a nice menu of choices and he was eating steaks with potato and other veggies several times a week and desserts and whatever he wanted basically.
So, what you get to experience in quarantine depends on how lucky you are.  My own experience absolutely sucked!

I was in Hotel for 14days in Shanghai, I carried dry food goods and cheese jam etc, the food in the hotel was good only little meat mostly veggies.

Thank you very much for your reply. You detailed explanation is much appreciated. Based on your review, I am preparing myself for the worst. If I get a choice, I will try to avoid the hotel you have mentioned. Thanks!

Thank you so much for your response. I will prepare accordingly.

I haven't booked any destination hotel yet, I hope it is not a problem as there is a mandatory quarantine for 14 days

I had not either.  They did ask at one point on arrival but I told them no, I had not booked one because I thought they arranged that trough the quarantine and I they just answered, oh, yes, we do.

However, about a week into quarantine they start asking questions.  They wanted to know:

1. Are you Staying in Shanghai or going elsewhere?
2. Where (what city, what hotel, etc) are you going to next?
3. Contact details for where you will be?
4. Contact details for who you'll be visiting?
5. Travel itinerary?
6. What will be your flight number if you fly out from Shanghai?

Make sure you have WeChat app on your phone. You will need it for the track and trace functions and the Mini Helath programs of the different cities you may visit.  Be prepared for the mini programs of smaller cities to be useless for you though as they do nopt accept Non-Chinese ID Cards or passport numbers usually.  Anyone questions you about that just say that the thing doesn't take your passport number.  Whenever a health app does not function most of the time you will be given the option to Sign in on a paper instead so they can still track you down if there is an outbreak.

Keep a stock of face masks.  Note that some places will not accept you wearing a cloth or fashion face mask so keep a few of the cheap surgical masks with you just in case.

Safe travels

I came into Pudong, Shanghai in October,
after Covid test we were bussed under police escort to Sky Rainbow Hotel, 30 minute ride? & given a room.  Two bottles of water a day. Three simple Chinese meals and as many coach roaches as you can catch. Meat free was available. Outside food was turned away. Tested again day before leaving. Hotel & food CNY4000. If you can speak Chinese you'll be fine otherwise make sure you can speak to an English person outside or on Wechat.
