Is a vacant immobiele a security risk in cyprus

I'm guessing that if you bought an apartment in a building that had a secure door entry system, it might be more secure than if you bought a house.  It might be better to buy in a neighbourhood where you had  neighbours all year round so that they could keep an eye on the place - or pay someone a small fee to visit your place regularly and make sure that everything is OK.  Take out an insurance too so that if someone breaks in and steals your stuff, you could claim from insurance.  Install an alarm system.
Bear in mind that covid-19 has caused many job losses on the island and crime is on the increase - people are desperate.  My car was broken into a few nights ago (yes....during curfew hours!) and they messed up the door lock and the central locking system.  They stole the radio, my sunglasses, my hand gel, a packet of anti-bacterial wipes, a plastic phone holder worth 99c, a €1 coin and all my empty shopping bags.  I tried to phone the police on 5 different numbers but got no reply on all of them, so eventually I couldn't report the crime, so how do they know what the true crime statistics are?  Best of luck!

Are there any known problems with illegal squatting in Cyprus? That is my biggest concern.

Hi. Like everywhere in the world, due to coronavirus, crime has increased, due to desperation, as people have lost work. Here, in Cyprus many people have not received help from the government due to the lockdowns.
The villages are probably the safest, regarding crime. This is probably, because everyone knows each other, I know in the village that I live in, neighbours take care of each other's houses, when their neighbours are away.
If you want a property near the coast, then the towns and larger more expensive villages with sea views have more crime as they have people with more money. There are properties with security systems, or you could install your own. Regarding squatting, I have not heard of any squatting in Cyprus, but of course due to the many unemployed there are now, due to this pandemic, this is something that could happen. I have lived in the same village for 15 years and my husband was born here, our village has never had any squatters, and hardly any crime, unless you include people stealing fruit and olives from people's land, which of course is stealing. Make the wise choice of not being too near a tourist area as thsie areas are well known to suffer more from crime than outlying areas....as they know they will beemty for periods of time and will certainly have light items easy removable items ipads phones etc cash passports id cards etc  so just be aware and make the right choice, if you are not sure then ask the locals they all know the crime areas.
