A possible family move to Montenegro......

My wife and I with our 2 year old son are looking at moving med- long term to Montenegro. Exact location of my work has not been confirmed. Internet research on various key topics is proving difficult namely:

1.    What is size of the UK expat community and where do they predominately live?
2.    Where would you recommend living for a young family?
3.    Availability of Doctors (pediatricians) and maternity hospitals
4.    Family friendly place i.e.: preschool activities, mother / toddler groups?/ nurseries?
5.    Long term renting seems difficult to find all the accommodation appears to be holiday renting only for the short term.
would welcome any assistance that you may offer.

Hi Charlie,

1. The UK expat community is not small, and is located mainly in the Kotor Bay area, and Podgorica. You can probably get exact figures from the British Embassy.

2. The Kotor Bay area is great for a young family, with a preference for the Tivat and Lustica areas which are the most sunny.

5. For long-term rental, one agency is specialised in long-term lets in the Kotor Bay area

Hoping it helps,
Loretta

Hi friends
Dobrodan! We are Australian couple in early sixties. My husband has Montenegrin passport and I have been offered one as well. is it a good place to retire? We came to Budva 7 years ago to buy a property and got a shock of our lives. There was no supermarket, theatre, no shops. Few restaurants near the promenade and we didn't know what to do. We did go to Kotor, Hercegnovi and ulcinch. What is it like now? Is the infrastructure better? Can you travel to neighbouring countries? Last time we were not allowed to go to Croatia. What is the best town along the coast? Please advise. My husband can speak the language but I can't.

Thank you
Nalini

I do not believe that there was no shops, there are plenty shops, supermarkets and restaurants, but you are right about cinema, theater, and other cultural life, at winter time all coast towns are dead. Just to give you better picture, average coastal town  (Ulcinj, Bar, Budva, Kotor, Tivat, Herceg-Novi) has 10 000 people so that is why there is nothing there....
In capitol, Podgorica, there are some things, not like in some megalopolis (there are 150 000 people in Podgorica and 600 000 in whole Montenegro) but there are cinemas, theater, exhibition place, concerts......
Traveling to another countries depends just on your passport, not with Montenegro. With Montenegro passport gives you option to travel to whole Europe without visa.
You should also know that Montenegro do not allows having another passport except Montenegrin.

Nemanja, you can own more than one passport, apart from Montenegrin.

The UK community isn't big, mostly at the coast and some UK expats live in Podgorica. Email me at [email protected] and I can help with connecting you to UK expats in Podgorica where I live.

It is not legal to do it, except if you are somebody famous and Montenegrin government decides to grant you with passport, in any other case you would need to leave other citizenship before getting Montenegrin.... it is well known fact!

That's news to me...I have two (Montenegrin included) and have an option for a third which I didn't take just for personal reasons. I have many family members and friends who have dual citizenship.

Apparently if you had dual citizenship before the independence of Montenegro you were allowed to keep both. After the independance to get Montenegrin nationality you are usually asked to give up any other nationality but there are exceptions.

That makes sense because of the relations with Serbia.

Hi there my name is Alley. My son Ben and I want to relocate to Montenegro and are also from South Africa. He is in the yathing industry and working in the Med and I am currently i  France spending the winter season with him. We both want to make Montenegro our home and it would be great to meet with others who have done this. We intend flying out to Montenegro next weekend to have a look at the areas you have recommended ...the sunnier places.... read that longterm rental is not easy to be found. Our intention is to buy a habitual property and would need guidance and assistance with this. There is no turning back so this would also as I believe help with application for temp residency for the both of us. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as we have a few more question like we bought a car in France that needs to come with, have cargo in storage in Nice that needs to be moved as well........

Kind regards
Alley

Hi Alley,
Welcome / Bienvenue !!
You should be ok for finding a long term let at this time of the year, it only gets really hard from March. You can get in touch with me about this, as I'm running the only agency which specialises in long term lets in Montenegro, so we have most offers available on our books. Or you can try to find online listings, but you might have trouble with the language.
Let me know when you're around, I'm happy to meet you and give you a couple of tips about residency etc. I am in my 10th year in Montenegro, so I know a thing or two :)
Safe travels!
Carine

Thankyou I will definately. I now we can visit Montenegro with our Shengen visa but can we use that to apply for residency please can you refer

No Residency can only be obtained if you have a work permit in Montenegro, or if you own property.
Cheers,
Carine

Hi there

I trust you had a wonderful weekend.  Apologies, I think I didn't phrase my question correctly.  Let's try again.  Will I be able to come to Montenegro with my Visitor's visa from France and buy a property in Montenegro to then proceed with application re temp residence?

Kind regards
Alley

Hey Alley,
Of course, but just for the sake of clarity, you need to check which is the visa requirement to visit Montenegro based on your citizenship  (see here for ex https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Montenegro).
If you have a British or French passport you can enter without visa (with tourist visa = stamp in the passport) and then of course you can buy property and then apply for residency.
Make sure you pay the tourist tax during your stay in Montenegro under the tourist visa. If you are staying in a hotel, then they will handle this for you.
Cheers!!

Hi Carine,

Thankyou for the reply will be in touch.

Kind regards
Alley

Hello. I think you have to own property (not land) in Montenegro so you can do your resident permit streight away.

Indeed for the residency based on property ownership, the property needs to be a built property, not land.

Hi. I'm planning to move to Montenegro with my wife and son. I work remotely with IT and I would like to know how to get a long term rent. Are you still working with that?

Thank you

Hi engtom,
Yes indeed, feel free to pm me :)
