Moving to Uruguay

Hello,

My husband and I are planning to retire to Uruguay in the next year or so.  One of the things we're wondering about is shipping furniture and household goods.  Is furniture expensive to buy there?  Just have no idea if it's worth it to ship our things or buy all new stuff.

Thank you for any help!
Cathy

Furniture can be somewhat more expensive but compared to the cost of shipping your menaje de casa along with almost certain damage, plus import costs and taxes, you'd be much better off buying furniture there, either new or especially used.

As I am browsing some prices, they do not seem to be expensive at all - a new 3-person sofa on sale for under $400 USD, a nice used ropero (wardrobe) for under $300 USD.

Plus the freedom of arriving with a minimum of baggage and being carefree cannot be overstated.  Shipping a 20' or a 40' container and worrying about it, plus dealing with delays and the bureaucracy and inspections and taxes and port charges, the problem of unloading at the port and then transporting it to wherever at usually high cost, can give you big-time headaches that don't seem to ever end.

Here is a link for Locanto, like Craigslist where people can post without cost items for sale, etc., for Montevideo (other large cities also have Locanto):

https://montevideo.locanto.com.uy/

Look under HOGAR Y JARDÍN on the left about halfway down, and then click on items starting with Muebles for furniture that people often individuals not businesses are selling.  For instance this is the link for bedroom furniture, Muebles para dormitorios:

Here is a company in Montevideo that will make furniture to order but they also have standard offerings:

Thanks so much - that is super helpful!  I hadn't thought about the extra expense of moving furniture from port to home.  I appreciate the links, too; otherwise I'd have no idea where to start looking!

I'm in the process of moving myself and have just bought and loaded a 20' 'used once' container which cost £2,400 inc vat. It cost another £500 to load and transport to the dock, about £500 for the port to port and $530 +iva to transport from MVD to Colonia. It will leave me with a very useful galpon as I have a fairly large plot of land. The contents cost quite a bit in the UK and would cost a lot more in Uruguay, so to me it was an easy choice. Having said that I dumped several items that weren't in the condition I had imagined, leaving a lot of space in the container. If you decide on shipping, containers come in 20' or 40'. Any other size is cut down from a full size box so will often cost more than a standard 1 or 2 teu (twentyfoot eguivalent unit). Hamburg Sud have decided to stop dealing with individuals so you will need a shipping agent to book your passage and arrange customs clearance.

Thank you.  I hadn't considered buying a storage container.

Good luck with the move!

Hello, my name is Blandine and I live in France.
I'd like to set up in Uruguay for living but first I am searching opportunities in finance mostly as financial analyst, credit and risks.
I do not know the wages for this kind of job and wich companies I could apply for.
Could you help me?
