Seems an odd time to visit, makes you wonder about whether the virus is actually worth worrying about.

You'd be amazed at the amount of time and effort goes into a port visit like this. This is a serious foreign policy exercise for the US. Bringing a Battle Group into port demonstrates a great deal of trust in the host nation.

Wish I had known earlier, I would have loved to have seen it.
I was on an American oil rig off Tunisa in the 80,s when an American carrier battle group apeared over the horison one mornimg & passed by us no more than a mile away , very impressive I must say, not sure exactly the dates but round about the time they bombed Tripoli. At that time also was the last time a battle ship was used in anger too as I remember.

If you were off Tunisia in '86, that would have been the America, Saratoga, or Coral Sea. All three were in that exercise. The last battleship engagement was a few years later, in '92. USS Missouri provided fire support for the the Gulf War.

If you spent time in rigs, you need to check out a book by Paul Carter, "Don't Tell My Mother I Work on the Rigs (she thinks I'm the piano player in a whorehouse)". Absolutely hilarious, true stories that no one on dry land ever believes!

You know, the one that will wipe out billions and be the extinction of our species. The one that came from bats, or was it snakes, or Pangolin or rats or the lab at Wuhan . . . or Bigfoot ?
Was Bigfoot I reckon .  . .
Just remembered I need to let the mother in law out of the spare bathroom, had her locked in there like I do once every month. She gets all hairy and howls and stuff upsetting neighbours when its a full moon
On a more serious note I too have seen an American battle fleet and hell it's impressive. Seems a bit over the top for an anniversary though but a good display of sheer firepower. Makes you wonder what the real motives are, must cost a fortune.

The motives are to counter Chinese influence in Asia. The US has already lost a fair amount in Korea, Japan, and the Philippines. The battle right now is over access to Asian ports for supply ships, and shipyard availability. For example, a US ship goes into drydock in the Philippines for a limited availability. All of a sudden "environmental" concerns prevent work that has already been paid for.

The Chinese grab of the Spratly Islands and increased military ties to Cambodia has probably contributed to increased relations between Vietnam and the US, hence the carrier visit. Yes, it IS expensive to operate ships, but the idea is that "showing the flag" is a deterrent much cheaper than actually going to war.

Thanks for the info, time flies & memory gets foggy. Will download the book to my Kindle & will be my next read, sounds like a laugh! Scary to think but I actually worked 42 years offshore oil & gas with about 16 of them years actually offshore on board!

On a trip to Mobile Alabama I went to see the battleship Alabama, awsome & fantastic day there looking round it.

My fav movie is....."Sink The Bismark" must have seen it 20 times.

I'm not trying to be controlling, but could you please post even minimal information describing the links you are sharing?

I don't think you're the only person who's ever simply posted a link, and I'm pretty sure I've done the same thing in the past.

I'm just I'm not in the habit of clicking on a link when there isn't some description of the target.

Even if the full description is in the URL, many times the full URL is not visible in links posted on this site.

Thanks very much.

I read somewhere that the same vessel has problems with its toilets. Badly implemented design means an expensive acids treatment on a regular basis..

Anyway back to the story.. so the ship called at Da Nang .. and let it's free presumably have some shore leave ? All this after the spread of the virus. Doesn't seem like a smart move.. maybe more to it...
