Negotiating salary and benefits in Sweden

Hello everyone,

Better job prospects in Sweden can most certainly be an incentive to leave your country of origin. Securing a contract with the right salary and benefits for you can be crucial to make your move successful.

Is salary and benefits negotiation regarded as common practice in Sweden? If yes, how should you go about negotiating your package (during the hiring process, on a monthly/yearly basis...)?

What do you expect to be included in terms of benefits in your package? Which benefits do you deem necessary in Sweden?

Is tax on the salary of an expat applicable in Sweden or do you have to turn to tax bodies in your country of origin to pay your taxes?

Do the exchange rates of currencies impact your salary as an expat?

Looking back, are there some changes you would have made during the negotiation of your salary and benefits package?

Thank you for sharing your experience,

Bhavna

No in government sector, in private sector sometimes an opportunity to negotiate may can appear because of different reasons for instance you are highly skilled and you find out that you are in a league of your own compares to other candidates.

collective bargaining agreement "Kollektivavtal" is often good enough to cover almost everything. To offer special benefits other than that often cost the employer in taxation of benefits other than the benefit itself. That is the main reason why benefits negotiations are not so common in Sweden.

Who ever work in Sweden must pay tax in Sweden if the salary comes from a employer who registered in Sweden.

Do the exchange rates of currencies impact your salary as an expat?

When it comes to taxes yes since the tax office always exchange it to Swedish krona. However very seldom an agreement is in a foreign currency.

Looking back, are there some changes you would have made during the negotiation of your salary and benefits package?

Yes I should have asked for one million per month or two :D
