The best Polish food is usually home made, especially bigos and pierogi: sublime or revolting,  depending on who makes it.

In the humble but serviceable milk bars across the country, I personally enjoy "placek po wiegersku", potato pancake with meat and usually a lot of sauce; zurek soup; and kompot, the stewed fruit drink that washes it all down. My tastes run to heavy food. More refined palates may prefer nalesniki, crepes, either sweet or with spinach.

Barszcz (beetroot) soup is also wonderful, especially at Christmas when you get it with "little ears" (small dumplings).
