Buddhism and property crimes

I met this woman and she has been totally obsessed with hanging out at the temple, doing work for whole days or weeks at a time. Wearing white (the white robe for women who haven't killed mosquitos recently...

Lying, stealing, embezzling and committing fraud. I'm totally shocked.

How can someone justify those different paths?

Greed or forsaking material things?

Am stymied, TBH.

Hypocrisy is a disease very commonly found in estate agent, politician, and lawyer populations all over the world.

The lady doing voluntary work at the Temple and wearing the White robes, likely believes that she will gain Merit from doing so. Maybe she feels that gaining Merit will counter her past deeds.

If that is the case then her actions could be compared to a Christian seeking Atonement by going to confession, or putting money in the Church donation box.

However, if gaining Merit is the lady's sole intention, and her actions are not genuine from her heart & mind, then her actually gaining any Merit from it is very doubtful.
