Moving to Tunisia with a disability

Hello everyone,

Having a disability should not be a barrier to living abroad. While the intricacies of one's move to Tunisia may be specific to the individual, certain steps can be undertaken to make the process smoother.

What are the important aspects you would personally keep in mind during the planning phase (social security benefits, ongoing medical treatment, etc.)?

Are you required to go through a medical check-up before your move?

Are there any organisations or groups who lend support to expatriates who have a disability?

What are your thoughts on the infrastructure in Tunisia (public spaces, transportation and buildings)?

Are there enough opportunities to make the most of your social life in Tunisia? Are leisure activities made accessible to people with disabilities?

Please do share your experience with us.

As a resident now over a year I can tell you that Tunisia makes no effort for those with mobility problems. In fact they have a very hard time keeping things flat. On a average walk of one kilometer walk in Lac II a wealthy section of Western Tunis I have to change or step over more than 50 large cracks or broken curbs or holes or steps. There are cross walks with paint on them but I have never seen someone stop for a pedestrian and when I tried there was screaming and hollering at me for stopping the flow of traffic. You may be able to find large flat areas in Carrefors or the LacII mall but sometimes the mall elevator is broken!
