Moving to Belize with a disability

Hello everyone,

Having a disability should not be a barrier to living abroad. While the intricacies of one's move to Belize may be specific to the individual, certain steps can be undertaken to make the process smoother.

What are the important aspects you would personally keep in mind during the planning phase (social security benefits, ongoing medical treatment, etc.)?

Are you required to go through a medical check-up before your move?

Are there any organisations or groups who lend support to expatriates who have a disability?

What are your thoughts on the infrastructure in Belize (public spaces, transportation and buildings)?

Are there enough opportunities to make the most of your social life in Belize? Are leisure activities made accessible to people with disabilities?

Please do share your experience with us.

Depending on the severity of the disability Belize is not in the most part an easy place to live.  The infrastructure is not specifically designed for disabled access. Few roads have side walks suitable for wheel chairs, and most buildings have a step or two ( mainly due to the amount of rain in he wet season)  Medical situation is also not sophisticated and in the most part very basic.  Social security in Belize will never cover anything for an expat. The Medical needed for the QRP is fairly simplistic and the aim is to avoid retirees bringing any diseases into the community. In the local communities  the old and/or disabled persons are looked after within the family unit, which in Belize can be a very large number of members looking out for that person.
