House with two separate living areas?

There are a lot of very large (4-6 bedroom) houses here, but all the ones I've seen are built with the idea that everyone in the house is living all together, sharing their lives, meals, etc.

Are there any houses that have 2 separate living/kitchen areas so that, for example, adult children or parents/in-laws can live more-or-less separately but in the same house? In Australia I would be loking for a house with a "granny flat", but I don't know if there is an equivalent here, or what it would be called.

Hi, it's called dual-key apartment/condominium units here! Usually one is smaller than the other, but both are self sustainable and most have separate entrances.

A lot of the houses or even apartment/condominiums has 2 living halls; main living hall with visitors and a family hall deeper into the house.

Which area are you looking at?
