Sense of humour in Italy

Hello everyone,

Should we set out to explore Italian's culture through its sense of humour? Indeed, if one is planning to settle in the country, it is best to understand the cultural codes governing humour in order to avoid any faux-pas.

What is special about the sense of humour in Italy?

Is it acceptable to joke about any situations?

What is typically funny and what is absolutely not funny?

Are there any popular comedians in Italy and how would one be able to discover them (stand-up shows, festivals, internet, etc.)?

What is the funniest joke you have heard in Italy?

Please share your experience,

Bhavna

I have found 3 subjects that are absolutely off limits. Don't even try. They are

1. mothers
2. food
3. the pope
Italians won't get offended, they just won't understand. No irony!

Remember "scherza con i fanti, ma lascia stare i Santi".
most italians love Papa Francesco, who has a good sense of humour and wouldnt be offended by a good joke. Of course if the joke is irrespectful, blasphemous or gross...well you simply show a bad taste.
You can joke about politics, that is common in italy and reality is much better than any joke!

I didn't know the saying 'scherza con i fanti, ma lascia stare i Santi'. Thanks.
