Swimming pool or not?

Hello all,

We are planning on coming to Cyprus in August and renting a villa in the Paphos area for 1 year, to see how we like Cyprus .

We would like a pool, but are now trying to decide if it should be a requirement in our property search, as we will obviously have more properties to choose from if we don't have a pool.
Those of you with pools, what is the normal months of use? I'm guessing they are all unheated and are only used from around May to September, so are unused for the other half of the year?

Any advice appreciated.

Greg

Hi Greg
My family and I are also moving to paphos around august time . My mum currently lives there , we have decided to rent with a pool , even if it's communal as we have young children , I also enjoy the pool during the warmer months , I know pools have little use during winter but I feel it makes up for the summer , but it also depends on weather you have children or not . Weather you enjoy the use of the pool ECT . Good luck with the move 😁

weve had both communal pools and private pools... currently we have our own private pool  and we wouldnt be without it -we tasted having our on pool four years ago and wouldnt go back to a communal one ...

costs arent much if you do the cleaning etc yourself or can negotiate it to be within  your rental

we have a good friend who is a professional certified pool cleaner and he
showed me how to do it and resolve any issues

paying for a pool guy can be anywhere between €50-€100 per month - average is about €80 ....and usually involves two cleans per week may to october and one clean per week november to april.. including chemical treatments etc

the main beaches do get crowded in summer...

Normal use for us is late april/early may to october... but then you may use it earlier and later depending on how hardy you are... lol.

as for costs

water is cheap at between  70c -90c per 1000L and in summer due to evaporation you may lose 200L per day with very little loss in winter months

electric is the most expensive in EUrope  average pool pump running times in summer is 4 -6 hrs per day depending on pool usage and is about 23 cents (all in) per unit (eg our pool pump is about 700w per hr so runs at about 16 cents per hr and turns the pool over about 4-6 times)  in winter 1-2 hrs running as that for our pool turns the pool over 1-2 times

200gram chlorine tablets are about €30 per tub of 50
PH-plus and PH-minus chemicals are about the same price  - but you only need them to balance the pool PH for safety should it be necessary -
pool water quality test strips are about €11 per pack of 100 strips - these are only indicators and sued every other day in summer and once per week in winter but a water test kit is a better option and not difficult to use
a good algae killer is about €17 applied every two weeks

I find it quite therapeutic

Thanks Toon, that's very helpful info - top man  :top:
I think we will stick to our original plan and go for a villa/house with a pool then - if we can find one! All the websites I've been looking at for properties to rent over the past couple of months never seem to be updated, and just show that almost everything is already rented out!

Facebook is a better option

what area are you liooking at

am not an agent i do it as a hobby i do not make charges its just something for me to do - but i have a group page called Only Peyia Properties  solely based on trawling property pages for properties in Peyia Coral Bay and St Georges areas...

there are some nice ones to be had depending on budget - one in particular for about €800 not far from the village centre (4-500meteres)

facebook is very good when looking for property and is more likely to be upto date

Buy-n-sell rent-n-hire in paphos is a good Facebook page , if you just look at the top few they are old ones , keep scrolling down and you will see what's added in the last few days ,

as is buy and sell peyia and paphos district only

Thanks guys, we are thinking of Chloraka, Peyia and Tala areas.

I'm not on Facebook, so unfortunately can't check any of those out. I will have to ask someone to have a look for me.

cant say i blame you... i only do my pages now but rarely post anything else

Samuel, can you give me some recommendations of places in Cyprus that aren't boring to live in? We were thinking of the Paphos area, but I'm all open to suggestions as we haven't committed to anything yet.

I visited Cyprus in 1970 through 1974 and left before the invasion (lucky enough).
In 72 to 74, the UN had to escort us through the Turkish Cypriot ghettos on the way to Kyrenia for safety and once through they returned to base. I know this island like the back of my hand. Famagusta was the liveliest along with Kyrenia. Limassol was very industrial, Nicosia was a melting pot. Paphos was a little dot on the map a lazy little village. I and a friend drove North to South and East to the West and went to the very tip of the Karpas Peninsula. So when I read about Toon being an Expert after 5 years here makes me smile.
But hey, Toon is a great guy and the next time in Paphos I will buy him a beer.

I first bought my apartment on the beach in Cyprus in 1988 and love Limassol because there are very few Brits compared to Paphos. The ones that are here are a different culture from your fish and chips, daily express with a handkerchief over their heads like Marco Pierre White, the famous chef.

Limassol is the liveliest city in Cyprus with lots of Cypriot culture and great Brits. the biggest marina in Cyprus visits from cruise liners and Naval ships from all over the world. Great nightlife and a beach stretching for miles with bicycle lanes along the seafront.  Ladies mile the long sandy beach with shallow water about 750meters, stones and beautiful yellow sand. The British forces in Akrotiri next to Ladies Mile refuse to let any improvements like tarred rods or wall to wall fish and chip shops and we have the wetlands beside and get the annual visits of the Flamingos.
In a nutshell, everyone to his own and good luck wherever you settle.

Samuel with respect I didnt allocate "expert" and don't and never have professed to being one. So smile away as much as you wish....Speak to expat.come about that.... I have lived abroad in two countries over the last 11 years and most of that time have been  active on this site.... probably a lot more than many I simply try to help....

each to his own is fine we  like the paphos area and all its fine villages ... we just dont like the limassol area ... it is not for us.... but that's not to say it will not suit others for various reasons... I always point out that if one needs to work then there are more work opportunities in the  major business centres of limassol larnaca and nicosia..

No problem Toon, from your messages, you are a great bloke helping the prospective settlers. To be honest I don't have the patience which you seem to have.

its what stops me getting "bored" lol
I like to help where I can if i cant then i say so and try and find someone with the answers and experiences i cannot provide... call it an education for me too - some of it I find interesting and helps me understand life and people here

Fortunately most people i have had contact with via this site have become good friends and are still here... so i must be doing something right - only had one bad egg.. and he has thankfully disappeared..
