Wine lovers in the DR

In another thread the topic of wine was initiated.  I am taking this opportunity to start this thread to talk about wine for all you wine snobs, foodies and lovers of the grape.

Coming from Washington State and living 15 minutes from Woodinville with its 130 wineries in my backyard and another 900 throughout the state, I can safely say we have consumed a glass or two of some lovely (and also some not so lovely) wines.

That said, I understand there is a winery - perhaps two - here in our new home.  I also believe there are some nice wines that are imported here from South America and beyond.

Can anyone share their wine experiences here in the DR?  What is the winery like?  Is it worth the drive?  Is there a wine tasting bar, either in Las Terrenas or a short drive away?  What about a hidden gem tasting room or wine shop elsewhere on the island?  What imports have  you found that are truly nice or what wines should we strictly steer clear from?

Thanks in advance for your wine tips.
Las Terrenas Tracy

I have never been to the winery but that might be a fine idea to go on a tour....

In terms of wine, I really like getting wine at Bravo.  They have a different selection then most of the big stores. They bring in case lots of mostly unknown wine at really good prices.  The wine is from all over it seems.  They have an ongoing special, buy 2 and take 3!   I have found some really good bottles of wine there.

Sweet!

We don't have Bravo in LT and have not seen it in my trips to Santo Domingo and Santiago.

I googled it but am not sure if there is a longer name for the store.  Where exactly is it located?  Is there more than one on the island?

Whats not to love about a good glass of wine with a good meal. For that matter even without a meal. In my profession I travel to many different countries where wine is not always the best. I have come to rely on a app to choose for me. It's called Vivino. I can use it anywhere and it has never failed me. All you do is scan the label and about 2 seconds later it will give you a rating.

Bravo -  might be supermercado Bravo.  There is one or two in Santiago,   we have I think  4 or 5 in the capital.

In the capital the biggest is on Churchill just south of  Kennedy,  a big one on 27 de febrero between Lincoln and Tiradentes and another big one on  San Isidro headed to Santo Domingo East.

Without doubt at Bravo you can find good wine and wine rated by Vivino.

Your nearest Bravo when you come down from Las Terrenas can be seen on the right as you drive towards the city on Autopista Las Americas:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Bravo … 69.8119434

There are several in the city.

I also buy a fair few bottles of wine at Carrefour the French supermarket chain which has a hypermarket at km 10 on Duarte (Plaza Duarte) with a large selection of wines including a very good French selection:

They also have an outlet in Downtown Centre and that is close to two Bravo supermarkets:

Generally one can find good Spanish, chilean and Argentinian wines here at the smaller specialist outfits in the centre of town eg. https://www.cavaalta.com/vinos-3/

Finally to add Dominican wine is horrible and swet and can be found at all colmados. The exception being the fie wine that is now produced at Ocoa Bay which is west of Bani.

Right now is an ideal time for a trip to Bani and nearby including Ocoa Bay because it is Mango Festival time!

Stay at Save Salinas and enjoy this lovely part of DR.

Enjoy.

I wonder if 'willieweb' will initiate a thread on rum for expats who like a tipple of that drink and for which DR is well known?

Thanks so much.  I was able to find the website.  I will definitely make that a stop on our next visit to Santo Domingo or Santiago.

Great post, thanks.  I forgot about Carrefour and french wine there.   It is clear across the city from me so I only go there on Sunday or holidays... guess what...... there is a  holiday tomorrow.  Going to Carrefour!  THey also have an amazing chocolate selection there.

Thanks much for all the great links and information.  I believe that  Ocoa was the winery that I had read about.  Might have to set up a visit.  Or perhaps it could be the location for an expat gathering in the near future.

I do love good chocolate!!!  and it does pair quite nicely with red wine.

In my world it pairs with EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!  LOL

You are my kind of gal!

It is more than a winery.

It is a real estate opportunity if you fancy the idea of having part of a vineyard in your property lot there.

A few of my colleagues in the real estate development business have been in dicussion with the owners and it still remains a unique property for futher development of hotel and villas to add to what is already there.

There's one in Downtown Center on Nuñez de Caceres. No need to go to the big one on the autopista.

The DR has a few of 'the oldest in the new world' landmarks

A church in Sto Dom
The lighthouse in Cabrera... Cabo Frances Viejo
and
Ocoa -- the oldest vineyard in the new world...

I've taken a liking to a wine I bought in Supermercado Bravo a couple of weeks back.

It was perhaps by chance I picked up a bottle of red wine made with the Mencia grape variety which up to that point was not on my radar. It was perhaps the 90 points given by GuiaPenin that caught my attention.

After several more bottles I must say the 2013 Lagar de Robla Premuim Mencia from the Arganza region of North West Spain is an excellent fruity and balanced wine and good value especially with Bravo's two for the price of three offer. 3 bottles for about $22.

Worth a try.

I love Brazos wine offer and selection! I will have to try that one!

Nacional now have the 3 for 2 deal on their wines like Bravo and the selection available from them appears to have widened significantly.......or at least at the Bella Vista Mall supermarket.

Nice, now I have to go there!!!!

I really should have posted this earlier, but a few of you might still be in the capital and looking for some good wines for Christmas.

Well Carrefour at km 10 on Duarte have had their usual wine fair in December and I took advantage to pick up a few cases of good Bordeaux at very competative prices a couple of weeks back. My understanding was that the wine fair would be over by now but on Saturday it was still there with plenty of selection and some new varieties by the case of 6. I was there for other purchases but I snapped up some good Alsace whites.

Both at the hypermarket on Duarte and at Carrefour Market, Downtown Centre you will always find some good wines and if you are alert you will pick up some bargains as they have specials at times. I picked up some fantastic Sancerre heavily discounted at the Market a couple of months back.

I cannot believe how much wine all of you drink. lol

love the info , during the holidays is called " attitude adjustment" is all good !!

Wine is good for you, particularly red wine

Thanks I will check out the downtown store.
