Budget 2019-2020: Post-Study Work Visa for international students

To further open up Mauritius to foreign skills and expertise and to spur better integration and collaboration between local and foreign students, a 'Post-Study Work Visa' will be introduced soon to allow international students to work 3 YEARS in Mauritius after completion of undergraduate studies in sectors where there is scarcity of skills such as ICT, Fintech, Artificial Intelligence and Biotechnology.

Additionally, under the 'Recruitment of International Faculty Scheme', 20 more international lecturers will be employed in public tertiary institutions.

More details on these 2 measures will follow soon.

This Post-study work option had been on the cards since a decade ago. However, it may well meet the same fate as the proposal to sell passports for 1M USD, that was announced in the previous budget. The rising unemployment among fresh graduates (most are underemployed or lumped into 'training programs') may be a serious barrier to this otherwise laudable initiative.

Not really, international students in Mauritius are already given internships and job placements and many others are already working part time. This new budgetary measure only extends the program to 3 years in some selects fields. Easy implementation.
And this one is not controversial as the passport and citizenship measures which were about monetary gains in the end.

Students are indeed allowed to park part-time during their studies as is the case in many developed nations. But they are not allowed to stay and work after graduation, This announcement is a marked departure from current legislation.

From working part time to working full time after their studies, I see no drastic changes. The students were already acclimated to the local environment and working culture. Mauritius is only following an international trend.
A far cry from the passport scheme where complete strangers would have been granted constitutional rights in return for money.
