Can someone suggest a small <1/2 kg gift for a Vietnamese friend in the USA, something they would find unavailable there? Travelling for business for a week soon, and I travel light. I would ask her or her family, but I want to surprise her with a Vietnamese treat she cannot get in her city in the USA .

In which state/city does your friend live? If it's CA (doesn't matter the area), Portland, Houston or Dallas-Forth Worth, then there's not a thing she needs and cannot find. If she happens to live in one of those areas but says certain things are not available, I bet those certain things are particularly special to her because they're from her hometown and not available widely in Vietnam either.
Be careful about bringing food into the States.
