Importing new UTV - pros / cons?

Good evening all,

Input, thoughts, and guidance desired.  After several weeks in our new little town, we are thinking that a UTV would be the best option for transportation to get around.

If we need a car to run into Santo Domingo or up to the airport, we can rent for the day.

I would rather buy new but have heard and read some concerning stories about the reliability of purchasing from a car dealer in the DR.

My husband has been doing research on 4 seater UTV's and I am wondering if anyone has order new from outside the country and what import fees and taxes you may have run into.

Purchasing new has it's appeal... we will know the maintenance history on the vehicle.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

Las Terrenas Tracy

Las Terrenas is well suited for the use of a UTV. i do not know about the legalities of operating them on the public roads, but if it is legal, by all means,  go for it.  since you plan to make it your primary means of transportation, buying a new one makes good sense.

I will ask my Customs clearance agent about duty!

I started that hunt a few years ago... never sealed the deal ... but there are the importers in Sto Dom
This is the Polaris - CanAm group

I have seen them with & without licences.

Thank you for this.  FYI this thread is 4 years old honey.

We would love to know more about you. There is a thread for introductions!!

Or go to a dealer and have him order you what you want..... no muss, no fuss

I'd start by asking myself some questions.

Do I have the experience/training to:

  1. Know which brands and models are reliable.
  2. Know the current market value for the make and model that we want?
  3. Know that there is an active market for it.
  4. Know a mechanic who can repair it.
  5. Know that replacement parts are in-stock in the RD.
  6. Know that the warranty will be honored in the RD.
