Hong Kong to KL- School for 3 kids

Hi All,

We live in HK for past 10 years and with ballooning costs of international schools and small cramped housing, I am seriously thinking about moving my wife and 3 kids to KL on MM2H. Please can you help me with the questions below. I will really appreciate your help. I have searched the forum but my questions are quite specific to my own situation

1. The most important consideration for me is Schooling. My kids currently study in intermational IB schools in Hong Kong and Fees range are around 9000RM per month. My third kid will start school next year and I don't think I can pay an additional 9K per month for his school. I am looking for good IB schools in KL for around 50k RM a year (or Max 60K). My criteria
                                                             1. Good mix of international and local students
                                                              2. Good IB programme and education quality
Please recommend some international schools

2. I heard about Cempaka international school from  friend? Any comments on this school? I heard most students are local, do you think my kids (12 and 8 years) will have tough time adjusting to a less international student mix? given their current school are quite international? This school does fit into my budget. Please recommend some other schools too.

3. Here is my budget for general house hold monthly costs. please comment on this

School: 3 x 5k =15k
housing:6-7k (I need good style condo and big one as that's one of the reason for the move)
Misc=2k (bills etc)
Groceries for 5 people: 7k
Misc others for enternationment/shopping: 5k

total= 35k per month

does this budget sound ok? I know a lot of people live in a lot less and a lot more. I am asking from expat point of view given I want my family to live very good quality life if we do need try this option

thanks a lot!

There are not too many offering IB curriculum throughout school years (sometimes its just a 6th form option) and most do it alongside the more favoured UK Cambridge curriculum.

This article gives an overview and fees are shown at the individual schools websites in detail

These offer it at junior level and Fairview only offers IB so is specialised. MKIS is expensive. I have excluded UCSI and its not a quality school sorry to say.

Have you considered PENANG for your family. Its a better environment than KL and there is a Fairview School in Penang as well. http://www.fairview.edu.my/fv_live/penang-campus/

I have friends with kids at Fairview in both PG and KL and they are very pleased with the education and it is a mixed and not an elitist environment.

Your budget for housing will depend where you live and what housing options are available, but its a renters market in Malaysia right now.

Expenses for food and others are very generous and could be used to offset a slightly higher rent.

Many thanks for your reply
I chose KL because it's a direct flight from Hong Kong
When you say Penang has better environment, why do you think so

Thanks a lot for the list

What are your views on cempaka Dan ASR's height IB? Please can you get me some information ? I am asking as Damansra heights seems to be a good neighbourhood to live ?
I heard most students are local , do I need to worry about my kids feeling left out or being bullied in class ?

How's the date yes KL neighbourhood ?
I want to rent a condo with 4 bedrooms and 2500 soft area

Thanks so much !

As you are Iranian then KL is best environment for your family.

I think I mistakenly put that wrong information in my profile
We are originally from Pakistan but born in the US
Have been living in Far East for last 15 years

You could contact member KiwinKL as she has some good insight into the various schools and neighbourhoods in KL which might be helpful. There is very little information about Cempaka discussed among expatriates so I assume, as you say, its mainly a school for Malaysian pupils. Damansara is the latest area popular with expatriates. First it was Bangsar, then Mont Kiara (still popular) and now Damansara. I am more familiar with the central and city areas so cant offer any thoughts about it as a place for family life. The reason I suggested looking at Penang is the pace of life is pleasant and it abounds with natural beauty. Its quite progressive, multicultural, international and open. Education level is high. I understand your concerns about the extra flight but it does not deter people in exchange for the quality of life. I think you will need to visit Cempaka and Damansara to form your opinions.

Thanks ! I do plan to visit the area but need to sort out schooling first .
My kids are in IB school here and ideally I would like them to continue in that system

For fariview, I found the information below

And there are loads of negative comments
Can you please give me some contacts of parents in Fairview ?

Other schools either dint fit into my budget or aren't offering IB :-(
Since I am not going to work in Malaysia
I am flexible with location in and around KL as long as it's safe and expat friendly

Thanks again

There was a lot of online sabotage around Fairview a few years ago because they were offering good schooling at a competitive rate compared to the so-called "top rung" schools. I don't know a lot about but have read those sorts of comments. The link you provided is not showing up yet. At one point the principle issued a statement about the harassment he and the school were receiving. That's the problem with the internet - it's like an elephant - it never forgets......

You could probably use your living budget differently and give another 1500-2000 per child for education per month, if that helps.

The basic issue is there is a sort of war in KL about what a real "international school" is and of course it gets rough sometimes.

To some, an international school is staffed solely by mother tongue English teachers who have teaching experience in other similar schools and move around the world regularly from post to post. Of course someone has to pay for the salaries of these elite educators and that is the students' parents. This is why there are different price ranges for schools. It is based on their staff salaries.

On the other hand, there are schools which have perhaps an English speaking international as the principal and maybe a handful of similar teachers, backed up by less expensive teaching staff which can be locals qualified to teach and teachers from the region who demand lower salaries as they come from lower-income countries.

The performance of the school is available from the IB governing bodies to check that aspect.  I do know that there is an academy at Fairview KL which actually takes qualified teachers and trains them to teach the IB curriculum. This has been heavily criticised by outsiders based on the "real" criteria. The school in KL is doing well and might even have waiting lists (do check this aspect out). They have just moved to a brand new building as well.

Fairview has an extremely diverse background of nationalities and this I would see as a plus point. It is also not an elitist school ie putting children there is based on choice and not on financial means

See if KiwinKL can help you with some information, opinion or contacts https://www.expat.com/forum/profile.php … mp;lang=en

If you do decide to investigate Fairview, it is actually located close to some of the most prestigious and popular housing areas in the KL catchment area. One such gated community is http://beverlyheights.com.my/?page_id=2594 which has club facilities (rather than condo-style living). It is a community convenient to comospolitan KLCC and has its own Shuttle Service to KLCC

It's a bit difficult to say exactly how many expats are living where these days, as there has been a huge downsizing of the expat community over the past 4 or so years.

Hi , I think i am local married to Japanese , we have a pair of twins girls age 16.  Due to my husband works we been posted to overseas since my daughters are 3 year old .  3 years back we had been posted back  to Malaysia and baes in KL .  I been searching around for international school in Kuala Lumpur before our last posting from Singapore .

Hi,

Thought I should quickly chip -in to let you know that you may not need MM2H to  get your kids into international school here.  If you register with any of the international schools that caters for foreign students they will arrange for the necessary visa for your child. They also allow one parent as a guardian and also provide a visa.  Of course if you are looking at the whole family being in Malaysia then you might need a MM2H.
Suggest you  take the 1st option first and when you have come here and obtained the student visa for kids then you can consider the MM2H.  I can put you in touch with a company that handles that.

A good IB school is Fairview International School.  It is located in the more suburban area of Wangsa Maju which is a short distance from the KLCC area.   Just check out Fairview International School in Wangsa Maju.   There is good housing both condos, landed properties and up-scale bungalows.  Easy access to the highways and plenty of  shopping malls around.
From my reviews of International schools in KL,  think Fairview has probably the best IB programme.
It will be best for you to take a short trip to KL and visit these schools before making a decision.  I will be glad to assist as I also live in the vicinity.

Hope this has been helpful.

Regards,

Robinson
