Irish oap

Hi, I am new to the forum, I am an Irish old age pensioner considering moving permanently to Tenerife, in Ireland I am entitled to free public healthcare and I have read elsewhere that UK expat pensioners are entitled to free public healthcare in Tenerife but I can't find a definite answer if this would also apply to Irish pensioners, and if it does is this sufficient to satisfy Spanish permanent residency laws, does anyone know ? also I believe there is a new healthcare bill currently going through the Spanish parliament, does anyone know its benefits and how soon before it will be law ?

The DWP pays spain 4,700 euros a year for each U.K. state retired pensioner which entities them to full health care,  free at the point of service

In at least theory everyone who does not have medical cover in spain is eligible for free cover provided by spain.  That even includes those who are illegally in slain

I assume one would need to register with the social security in spain and then prove they do not have health cover to get the free cover

It would be very interesting to find out if Ireland had any similar type of arrangement with Spain, but I don't know how to find out, thanks JOHNCAR for the info.

I could not find anything on the Internet about an agreement between Ireland / Spain re medical cover.

When I need to check out anything about the agreement between U.K. and spain I call the DWP, the U.K. pension provider.    May I suggest you ask the Irish equivalent ?

Thanks for that JOHNCAR, forgive my ignorance but what does DWP stand for, I assume it's department of-----------?

DWP is the government Department for Work and Pension,  it is the U.K. pension administration service

Thank you.

It would appear you should be able to get the information you require from:-

Thank you JOHNCAR.

There's an interesting article from The Irish Times which might help:

https://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/genera … to-europe/

Note that it's from 2012 and there may be changes.

There are also the EU guides:

You could also enquire at your local HSE office or check out HSELive:

https://www.hse.ie/eng/HSELive

The Times article has lots of links that could be useful. I imagine the HE office might be the best and easiest bet and would save you a lot of searching.

good luck anyhow

Thank you for the information, I will check it out, I was also advised by my local citizens information office to contact the Irish embassy in Spain, but even they had no definite answer, only to check it out in the local area where I plan to live, very hard to get a definite answer on this one, I'M hoping that maybe the new healthcare for all bill currently going through the Spanish parliament will bring positive results, thanks again.

Macivor

Note that the free cover provided by spain only applies if one does not have cover.   Thus a U.K. pensioner would not be eligible because at the present ( post Brexit no one knows) they have cover paid for by U.K.

If Irish pensioners get similar cover from Ireland they too would not be eligible

And lastly, the regulation is not  going through parliament, it  has been in existence for quite some time

Not that it matters mcivor, but your profile says you are an Iranian citizen?
