How is the weather in Netherlands?

Hello,

Would someone be kind enough to describe the weather in the Netherlands ?
Also, if someone has lived in Sweden, how would you compare the weather in Sweden (South/Stockholm) vs the Netherlands (Amsterdam) ?

We are currently evaluating which European country we'd like to move to and weather (day light) is a big factor. If it matters we'd be moving from the northern Australian outback which has a massively tropical climate and we are tired of the heat and humidity.

Cheers,

P.S: I did google for it and all that everyone says that the Dutch weather is better. No one extrapolates what is better.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Holland is flat and isn't that big; its western/northern coast faces the North Sea which basically means that any climatic issues pretty much affects the whole country and the climate is basically cool, cloudy and humid; rain is not that bad, but it's consistent throughout the whole year.

Temperatures - summers around 17 > 18 °C; winter 0 ° > 6 °C; spring 10 > 16 °C; but it's the wind direction that will really determine the extremes; winds from the west, south-west and west generally cause warmer weather; from the north, north-east and east the opposite.

Temperatures in recent years have been a bit warmer, to the extent that many winter-sport activities (the Dutch are big on ice-skating) have been restricted to indoors.  Long-term, you should perhaps consider that much of Holland is below sea-level and the effects that climate change may have on the country.

Hope this helps.

Hey @Cynic, that does help. Thanks mate.
Would you please be able to comment on the day light in Holland ? Is the day light as unavailable as is in Sweden (No day light for 4 months and no night for 2) ?  The family is predisposed to get gloomy on days under the weather (no sunlight).

Cheers,

No at all: in winter the light start around eight and end at five. After the shortest day the daylight increase around two minutes every day. In summertime the light start around 5 in the morning until eleven in evening.
It doesn't mean that some people don't suffer from light insufficiently.

Agree with Primadonna; the daylight issues you describe for Sweden only really affect the north of that country; Holland is much further south.

If it's more sun you are looking for (there is a difference), then you should really look at going further south to Spain.
