Yes I did this. Make sure you leave enough time to complete the formalities in UAE. DON'T FORGET TO GET THE PINK SLIP FILLED IN AND STAMPED. I did and it cost me 2,000sr extra at the border. Otherwise getting through the KSA border was efficient and quick.

You buy and export the car - no need to go through the license plate procedure as to register car in UAE in your name with plates, requires you to have a residence visa / Emirates ID there.
