Language barriers in Belize

Hello,

Learning a new language is a part of the expat process. Let's find out how crucial it is to know the language in Belize.

What is the official language in Belize, and what are the other popular spoken languages?

Is it possible to live in Belize and get by without speaking the language?

How do you manage to communicate with the locals if you don't speak the native/official language fluently?

What are some popular and useful phrases that expats absolutely need to know?

Can you share some tips about how to survive in Belize on a daily basis without speaking the language?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

Belize is an English speaking country.
This  only means all government and major business is conducted in English and is the first language od=f the school system.
You CAN live in Belize and never need anything else.
Having said that a lot of Belizeans speak other languags in their homes and among themselves in the work places.
Spanish, Kriol, Different Chinese dialects, and several Mayan Indian dialects.
As it has  a majority of young people who have gone through the school system It is mainly only the older folks who do not speak and understand any English.
