This is a physics issue, bordering philosphy:
Does an event really happen if no-one observes it?
Quantum mechanics teaches us that we cannot be sure  and can only calculate probabilities of it having happened - until someone checks (observes), then the probabilities condense into either "it did happen" or "it did not (yet)".
