You are in China, and don't know anyone with WeChat. Is this a joke? I find it inconceivable.

Maybe you need to get out more. You need to make some Chinese friends. I'll bet you are in a Western city like Shanghai, aren't you?

Why be in China if you are not ready and willing to go local?  Make the dive or leave. I think that is why you are having problems with Wechat. You haven't tried to make friends. You haven't tried to integrate. You haven't done the necessary deep-dive that is required when you move to a new nation.
