Finally leaving the garbage pit aka Dominican Republic

When I began planning my early retirement (I'm 43) I had already lived in New York City, Mexico City, Buenas Aires, San Juan Puerto Rico and throughout The United States Virgin Islands. I had vacationed in Bangkok and Cambodia. Nothing and I mean nothing prepared me for Dominican Republic.  Every level of society is corrupt EVERY LEVEL!!! When I first arrived I moved to a small apartment in El Brisal, Americans never move here this is where the deported from The United States tend to restart their lives and lets face it, they weren't escorted out of the US with VIP service unless you like handcuffs and shackles and a free trip on con air. El Brisal is a lower middle class neighborhood that has a bizarre aura as if they are superior to everyone. My first days I began to notice drug dealing at the local empanada spot. I'm from NYC I was not getting involved. I stayed with my Dominican partner there for 3 months. Water only worked for 4 hours during the day when another tenant wanted to shower she would turn on the water and when finished she turned off the water. Dominicans in general are only concerned with themselves and screw the rest of the world. The amount of stray cats and dogs, my heart just couldn't take. I was feeding 3 cats plus my own in the house and had to put down one because of leukemia.
We moved to a "better" spot in Santo Domingo Este. Mistake #2
Neighbor downstairs was deported as well. He has 3 dogs chained to one spot and they bark and cry all day. I LOVE ALL ANIMALS and this is killing me. The neighbor to the right has a dog that just wants shade and the idiot owner keeps him chained to a tree more than 300+ days a year.
I'm exhausted and I'm tired of reading on this site about Americans not being tough enough to make it. I see it the other way around. The Americans that live here are not tough enough or don't have the financial resources to survive in our home country. When I see an American I feel pity. Most of the Americans that "make it here" have no plan, no desire, they just want cheap. Cheap rent, cheap food, cheap medicine, cheap, cheap, cheap! It disgusts me. You the American or European are using services whether you realize or not that Dominicans could be using. "Oh, I don't work!" But your 200 peso meal should have filled a Dominican not you fat American. You don't deserve it. Pay your share as an American and stop using the backs of foreign labor to improve your ego. We both know you can't afford a maid in the US so clean up after yourself. Your not helping anyone in this country by being here. Dominicans deserve Dominican Republic because they fight for nothing and change nothing. I am leaving this island soon. I will be leaving problems that have simple solutions, but to the Dominican they are unsurmountable and therefore never will change. This is my first time saying this but " I HATE THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" The rest of you gluttons for punishment stay and argue for water, plumbing, cable, phone, electricity, shipping and lawless police, moral less people, evangelicals who swear by the bible but never offer a grain of rice for the poor. Stay and fight for your misery! YOU deserve it!

Wow, I am so sorry you feel this way.  You are entitled to feel what you feel!  I truly  hope you find the place that will work for you and wish you all the very best of luck! It must be horrible to live in a place you just do not like.  Take care.

To all others:  there will be no attacking on this site.

Some expats fail - Time to move on and find a place you like.
Best of luck.

Best wishes in your search for a new home you'll feel comfortable in.

Wow all the best.........

That was harsh.   But hope you find your dream location.    All of dr is not the same.    Check out Costa Rica.

In this world nothing is given and ALL is earned. To be happy you can't expect anyone else to find, or make you happy. I'm so sorry to hear of your frustrations here, though I am sure and pleased that you are taking the initiative to move on and find where you can make yourself happy. I wish you nothing but the very best and somehow feel in my heart that your happiness awaits you somewhere. where that is you will find. God bless.

Wow......I wonder if you could solicit PETA to go down there and look into the horrible abuses of those poor animals.  Do you think PETA could make a difference?

Not a hope

Boy....You sure said a mouthful :| but I guess when something does not fit, it is best to exchange it for something that does.  Many of the things you have pointed out are very accurate, but everyone has different levels of tolerance.  There is good and bad here just like any other place, but I can relate to how you feel....I hope you will return to the forum and let us know if you were able to find that perfect fit, since there might be others who feel the same and might want to give it a go. Best of luck on your new journey.

Well,..... those who are familiar with my posts will know what my opinion and feelings are for this unfortunate soul. Just wait until he crosses the River Stixx.  May compassion come to the fore & enable him (her?) to find peace.   I will say that condemning  (sp) an entire country & ALL of it's population seems a bit much.  There, I have successfully stifled myself.  Proud of me Planner?

Another thing. Who guided you to those mean streets to live? There are many groups & organizations that work to reduce some of those problems. Groups that work with the animal population, others that help with the kids schooling; such as the Sosua Kids Organization, helping over 400 poor kids with school supplies & such. Free clinics for the poor are all over.. Many opportunities for those who truly want to make a difference.  Those on high should remember the words of Katherine the Great: "Let them eat cake."

Completely different view of this island and it's people than mine.  Adios, and bonne chance!

You are 43 now and retired...good on you. It seems you have travelled and lived in places while making your nest egg. It also seems that you certainly don't wish to go stateside,  perhaps a tax issue, not that I blame you. As a retiree who earned my retirement working for 40 years, living  countries far worse than this for periods of time, I will simply wish you the very best. Costa Rica is very nice! I have family there and from all indications,  it does not have the issues that caused you to reject this country. Good luck, but remember, your experiences were created by you and your choices...

Wow, I hope you find the place you're looking for.

In our case, we love this island,  the people we have met, the villa we have built, the food, the cold beer, the beautiful beaches and how much my golf has improved.
So If you see us, feel no piti

Good luck in your search

You lost me right here.

I guess I'm confused at why you would move to El Brisal if you say in your words...... "Americans never move here this is where the deported from The United States tend to restart their lives and lets face it, they weren't escorted out of the US with VIP service unless you like handcuffs."   Those very words should of been your warning, I try to avoid the criminals in the US, and certainly would not move to their hometown in a new country, but maybe you had your own reasons for choosing that area. The corruption is more in your face to see in other parts of the world, but it exists in the US too in the form of clean cut men/woman in their business suits in our Workplaces, Government and Churchs! As far as the animal abuse you witnessed that is something I could not (and will not be able to handle) all I can do is try to HELP when I'm able and try to educate people. But it goes on every day in US and all over the world....some day the abused animals will be at peace🐾😢  I know my own animals are LOVED every day. There is no perfect place to live, but enough people on this forum have convinced me with there truths of good and bad of what to expect when I get there. If it is totally unbearable as you say I will do what you are doing and give another area a try. I hope you find your little slice if paradise that we all are searching for.

:D

Vitriol is a part of you that no amount of honey will ever sweeten. The level of emotional pain you carry can never be assuaged. It could possibility be lessened with the proper meds.  Slow your search for personal vindication & perhaps find your  personal nurvannah.  Yeah, I can't spell, look it up youself ..................

OK Tinker your point is made.

It was Marie Antoinette who said : let them eat cake 🎂

You are.correct of coarse, and the only one who passed the test.  Maybe not the only one, however the only one who gave a damn. Thank you.  I toss one in every once in a while to see if people really read or merely scan the posts.  Again, thank you for your vigilance & caring enough to mention it.

😘

I wanted to respond with many things,  but I wil show restraint.

Thank you!

Julian & Planner, once again we find ourselves riding on the same bus.... thank heavens for that!  Astute people still exist!

Wish I would have read this earlier
Conair is way cheaper than westjet

I can understand his feelings. However, for people who are particular about their environment it is very important to choose where you live more carefully. DR is a beautiful place but if you live in the parts with the less fortunate and you are sensitive and particular this won't work for you. You need to be in the upper class society and pay a lot more for where you stay. I could never live in certain places even in the US. So, I usually spend a pretty penny on where I chose to live so my experiences meet my needs in every way. Piantini is a great place and lots more like it. Sometimes good things are not cheaper. That's what happened here, this is why his experience was horrible for him. I'm sorry he gave up but I hope he finds happiness it's what you make it
