Hi everyone. Has anyone had the problem that, when attempting to renew their visa on the Bahrain causeway, was told you cannot renew by car but must fly into KSA? This stressful event happened to me. Was informed at causeway that this 'rule' had just been introduced. Anyone with knowledge/experience of this?

Yes, I got caught about the time you did. It was a complete surprise for me.
I am from the USA with a Business Visa five-year multi-entry but my visa says AIR as them means of entry. I am told that from the USA it is not possible to get anything but a AIR visa. The only way to get a car visa is to apply at the Saudi Embassy in Bahrain.
You may still have to fly into Saudi to activate your visa.
So if you are from the USA or UK, and you work in Saudi on a Business Visa, it will say AIR and you will have to pay for a second Business Visa you apply locally and you can get a OPEN visa.
Does anyone else have some to add?
