Hello all

Just joined the expat forum - my wife and son (17) are just completing the purchase of our new home in Tavira - exciting and daunting all at once :-)

Joined so I can ask for recommendations and help on various matters that appear simple and mundane in the UK, but with current very limited language skills, these are much more difficult in Portugal.

So simple stuff to start with ... utilities ... all advice and help choosing and going about this most welcome.

Broadband - who is best ? cost and service wise - speed is vital as I need to dial into the UK for work.

All help greatly appreciated

Jon

Hi.

Welcome to Portugal!

On utilities (power, gas): use the ERSE simulator to pick the cheapest option for you:

If it comes in Portuguese, change the language to English on the top right of the screen. Some might differ, but I would pick one of the largest utility companies (Galp or EDP). They tend to work reasonably well.

For broadband... Services are fairly similar across he different carriers when it comes to speed and uptime. I work with IT and I would pick Vodafone if possible due to service quality and, most important, mobile coverage  (but some will tell you that other companies are also good). Remember that these companies also sell cable TV, mobile services and landline, so you might want to get a package and save yourself some money.
