Life in Turkey - Istanbul

Hello all,

Would like to know if any expat would care to share their exprience about the life in Istanbul.
Things in general like cost of living, safety, language limitations, relationships in general and so on.

Thank you in advance!

- Mariana

cost of  living, around 3.000 TL
safety, safer than most of europe (except for south eastern part)
language limitations,(yes we have a language barrier yet its good for foreigners because its easier to find a teaching job)
relationships (expats here are mostly introverts or they dont have large social circle. It all depends on personality though. Some of them is opposite)

have a nice day

HI InfoaboutTurkey!

Thank you for your reply.

you mean 3,000 TL for renting only? per month?

are teaching jobs the only kind of job opportunity?
After turkish is English the second mani language?

Istanbul is the most populous city in Turkey with around 15 mil residents and the city is huge. Traffic jams are quite usual and the most important thing is to pick where to live with due diligence. Overall, the city looks like a mixture of NYC (with its 24/7 life and hectic pace), Rome (After all, it is full of history and it was the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire) and Kabul (conservative neighborhoods).

The cost of living depends on where you live and what you do. The minimum salary is about 1600 Turkish Lira (currently a bit less than 400USD). A Big Mac Menu costs 20TL (5USD). Coastal neighborhoods are quite nice and there are lots of cafes and bars to hang out. A nice coffee is around 8-10TL, due to the inflated levels of real property prices. Alcohol is expensive because of the taxes, a glass of beer would cost around 10TL. Rent would change depending on where you live, but I think sharing a flat would be the best idea. You would spend something around 700-800TL per person.

English is the second language, but do not expect everyone to speak English. However, people would speak some basic English, especially the youth.

Friendships are quite easy to make, the culture welcomes good company. You would not need to "schedule" a meeting just to see a friend. Dating may be challenging for a total foreigner, so "friends of friends" are always good to have.
