Hi,
can anyone recommend a safe and trustworthy driver that I can hire to pick me up and take me around the country for a few days? I understand that I should be able to set my own itinerary and the driver is usually responsible for his own food and accomodation during the trip? How much should I expect to pay?

There is actually no "west coast of Malaysia" as such. North of KL there is Lumut, Pangkor Island, Kuala Sepetang, parts of Penang/Island, Langkawi Island. There is no coastal road or connection.
