Successes in your career in Indonesia

Becoming an expat means starting over in a new country, and a lot of times that also means starting over in your career as well.

How have your skills and experiences evolved since moving to Indonesia?

What does being successful in your career mean to you?

Can you share some tips about what to do and what to avoid in order to advance in your professional career in Indonesia?

Can you share an inspirational career story with us?

Did you have to change careers or adapt your career to fit the job demands in Indonesia?

How do you balance a successful career with your personal and social life?

What are the benefits of having work experience in different countries?

Thank you for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

1 - Learning the language, even if it's only enough to be polite, is an absolute must.

2 - Learning, understanding, and accepting cultural norms is more important than learning the language.

3 - NEVER tell anyone how much you earn. The vast majority of locals earn a lot less than the vast majority of expats so you'll very likely cause a lot of trouble for your company and yourself.

4 - Be nice to everyone around you. An aloof attitude isn't going to help you in any way. A friendly but not too friendly manner works around here but still allows you to maintain authority if you're the boss.

5 -  Even if you hate Indonesia, think the move was the worst mistake you've ever made, and can't wait to get out of the country, NEVER mention it to the locals unless you want the whole company to hate you and do everything they can to make your life a misery. Nationalism is big here and anyone knocking the country isn't going to make any friends at work.

6 - NEVER mention religion in any negative way - any religion.

7 - Even if your boss is so bad you suspect his parents aren't married, don't suggest it as the defamation laws are very harsh.
