Does public gynecologist exists?

Hello,

I recently moved to portugal and I need to visit a gynecologist. I registered in public clinic and i got my appointment with GP. But the Gp just sent me to go to blood test and some other tests which will take like month to get it done or more with all the waitig time. The doctor didnt send me directly to any gynecologists.

I am desperate. I would like to go to a gynecologist. But I found just bunch of privite ones with expensive services. I would like to know, is there such a thing as a public gynecologist? And how can i find one, because I tried and I couldnt so It lead me to believe there is none.

Any advice would be very appreciated. Thank you

Hi Lillien,
As a man I obviously have no experience with GYN. However, I notice you live in or around Setubal. If important or urgent, I would try a major hospital in Lisbon.
Re: blood analysis, were you told how much time it would get to have the results, or are you guessing?
Depending of your case, the GP may be right to wait upon the blood test results before sending you to a GYN. Remember, in this country "waiting" for health care is a common word. Last but not least, and if your case is very serious, I would recommend to consult in the private sector despite the cost. (I know! Easy to say but not easy to pay for!)
Good luck

It's really a matter of how urgent your condition is. If your GP decided not to send you immediately to a specialist it's because he didn't found anything urgent or needs the information from the exams. If you believe it's urgent you can try to go to the emergency service of your district's hospital (only the major health units tend to have this sort of specialist available). Else, you'll need to pay for an appointment with a private doctor.

Did you find out if public gynecologists exist in Portugal?

My wife and sone relocated to Portugal 2 years ago. We also have a useful app called "Kovered" (kovered.io) that is very helpful in locating health and wellbeing needs.

Hope this helps

Hello yes of course exist public gynecologists I've been there many times. you must go to centro da saude were you registered in public hospital and ask for an appointment of your family doctor there. he or she will be the one who can give you a recommendation to public gynecologist. or if you have a private insurance you will pay only half for a private gynecologists

OK thank you. Good to know.

My girlfriend had an appointment with a GP at the centro da saude and the GP told her that public gynecologists don't exist.
I didn't believe it, as it's really a basic medical need. So thanks again for the confirmation. We'll try to get another doctor. How much do you pay for the public gynecologist?

Do you also know if there are public dentists to get a yearly descaling? Or do we have to go private for that?

I've been to private gynecologist before and i payed only 25€ because i have a private insurance. I have no idea how much is it in public for now I have free of charge for gynecologist in public because I am pregnant.  Dentists is only in private and it costs 40€ here in my place.

Hello Kate,
What was the clinic you went to? I'm a bit confused with this health system and the only place I found was really expensive, and this one you found sound cheaper.

Thanks in advance,
Julia
