Cooking like a local in the United Arab Emirates

Hello,

Enjoying the local food of your expat country is great, but learning to cook the dishes yourself is even better. Please share what it's like cooking like a local in the United Arab Emirates.

What are some of the most popular local dishes that are easy to prepare?

What are the most common ingredients used in dishes in the United Arab Emirates? Where can you purchase them?

Is there a specific technique or a secret ingredient to master the local cuisine?

Are there resources available to teach you to cook like a local (classes, websites, etc.)?

What are the advantages of learning to prepare local dishes in the United Arab Emirates?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

Cooking like a local or arabic in United Arab Emirate is cool and the most interesting thing to learn most especially for non arabic origin. Learning to do so would enable you to be cost effective towards  cooking as you  would be able to cook on your own because you can not be manage to be cooking your local origin all the time,as an adage says 'when you are in Rome behave like a Roman' .Cooking like a local does not require any formal skills all you just need to learn is 'taste' with that you are good to go in preparing local food of your choice. Arabic foods are complex and the cooking might be diversify at times but so far you understand the ingredients to be used,it will be easier. Common Arabic foods are Sandwiches (liver, fellafin, cheese, egg'fried',egg'boiled, humus bilaham, mushaka etc), Grills (chickens, beef, fishes all based on kilo) Appetisers (fattous, taboula, salata arabia,Jeji, etc) Juices (coctail, lemon nana, avocados, etc), Foods ( magbous, magloba, mansef, fatel laham, fatel dajaj, alfredo, bamiham, kusari, briyani etc) common ingredients used in cooking are, salt, lemon salt, kusbara, magdonise, kamus powder, kusbara powder, chatter, curry powder, tomato paste, white pepper, black pepper, tahinna, raisind seeds, garlics, mayonnaise, etc. Some of the aforementioned ingredients has arabic name but those I understood were written in English and the rest were written based on their arabic pronounciatoin and all these ingredients can be purchase inside most of the groceries and supermarkets. You can learn local foods through personal contacts, corporate bodies, etc.
