Cooking like a local in Montenegro

Hello,

Enjoying the local food of your expat country is great, but learning to cook the dishes yourself is even better. Please share what it's like cooking like a local in Montenegro.

What are some of the most popular local dishes that are easy to prepare?

What are the most common ingredients used in dishes in Montenegro? Where can you purchase them?

Is there a specific technique or a secret ingredient to master the local cuisine?

Are there resources available to teach you to cook like a local (classes, websites, etc.)?

What are the advantages of learning to prepare local dishes in Montenegro?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

Hi,

It depends, in coastal region fish is very popular and all other sea delicacies (squid, octopus, prawns etc). It is similar to Italian food.
Central and north region specialties are based on potatoes and meat, cheese, smoked ham (Njeguši).
Last summer in Kotor Mrs. Vlasta Mandic organized cooking classes and I read today that in Podgorica, one hotel will organize something similar. Will write again if I find out which one. Traditional cuisine is only to be found in ethno villages and northern areas (kačamak, priganice, try if you have a chance!), and tourist restaurants are offering food which is mostly Mediterranean or European.
Locals enjoy slow cooked food for lunch (stews-depends on the season).

Regards :)
