Licenses in Korea and your home country

Most expats, if they drive in Korea long term, take the somewhat discriminatory Korea car licensing exam.  You can keep your own foreign license and pay a bit of money and get a Korean license, too.  My question is what happens if you are living here long term, perhaps 5 or more years, as your own country's license is in danger of expiring and about half the time the Korean license is not recognized in your own country, as Korean licenses are not recognized in most US states.  How easy or difficult will it be to renew your own country's drivers license once you have established permanent residence in South Korea?
