Welcome to the forum.

St. Julians and/or Sliema are very nice areas. Just stay away from the Paceville and hotel area. Jobs as a chef and in the hotel business should be available , especially in the summer season. Try and get job offers before you come to Malta.

I will try and find out about the St. Julians primary school. There are several good posts and discussions on schooling.

I can give one parent's perspective on rasing children in Malta - we have a 14 yo daughter and a 9 yo son and have been here for 15 months.

If your child goes to local Govt. school (free) you will likely live relatively close to the school and so will your daughter's school friends, so you should be able to arrange play dates reasonably easily. If your child goes to Independent school you may not live so close to th eschool and certainly most of your daughters school friends will not so play date opportunities will be quite limited...this has been an issue especially for my 9 yo.

There will likely be a language barrier at the Govt. schools - though this seems to vary from location to location. Independent schools will not have the language barrier but are quite expensive and have other issues (at least from my own experience, though I also know others on this forum are perfectly happy with their school choice).

Looking further to higher education and work - your child will probably not have limited opportunities in Malta to compared to those they could in Ireland/UK.

We have some friends who moved here a year ago that have just made the decision to move back to the UK partly because of "Only In Malta" type issues and partly because of some school issues. It's a decision we wrestle with daily ourselves for much the same reasons.

All of these things are very personal points of view based on life situation and experiences. I think couples without kids tend to find Malta more satisfying than families - but I realise that's a generalisation and I know there are expat families here that love it, but from my experience they are in the minority.

Good luck with your choices. If you read the posts in this forum you will see that Malta can be a very complicated place to live, so don't expect too many unqualifed responses.
