New members of the Spain forum, introduce yourselves here - 2018

We're Sue and Steve, currently living in Denver, Colorado in the U.S.

We're considering retiring in the San Sebastian/Donostia region in the next couple years, and will be making a "scouting trip" this coming May. If anyone would be willing to meet us for a cup of coffee or glass of wine, we'd be most appreciative! We're interested in learning more about Basque culture, opportunities to improve Steve's culinary education, and generally living like a local. Gracias!

Hi my name is Kenya,

I want to rent in Spain for 6 months. Do you know of anyone you can put me in touch with that speaks English?

Thanks x

Hola  :)

I am considering to move to Valencia in June, currently living in Slovakia. I am about to take interior design online course, which I can take in any place :)  and I would like also to attend some school to learn some Spanish basics. I will be glad if I can find some friends to go for a coffee or go for a run :)

well - you have to define first your overall requirements, starting from the province/town/area in which you want to stay.
*
you may start searching relocation agencies who provide also housing services, for instance at Costa Blanca,
or negotiate your issues directly with real estate agency at such affordable housing areas
eg Alicante, Torrevieja, Orihuela, Cartagena...

Hi,
I am Fred and I am moving with my Austrian wife and our 4 cats from the UK to Lliria near Valencia end of August. I am originally from Zimbabwe (born in Salisbury, now called Harare), moved to South Africa in the 80' and have been living in the Uk for the past 10 years. After Brexit my wife Dagmar took me to Spain and I absolutely loved it. So we decided we will move there this year. Would love to find friends in/around Valencia area to show us the "ropes".
Fred

Fred.  To avoid possible confusion.

NB      Brexit has not yet happened.

So I guess you meant to say ‘after the Brexit referendum'

Hi
My family and I are very keen to move to Spain but have so many questions I don't know where to start.
A major concern is schooling and finding schools for my three children.
I am an ceramicist/artist and would be looking for a property and area that is inspiring and have potential to teach or sell my work but also need to source materials.

Any info would be greatfully received.

Nicola.

Hi, I am Maria!
I have just moved in Vigo, Galicia, Spain where I was living ten years ago so I know the city and the surroundings as well.

I am an engineer and a winemaker. I work in a winery. I know countryside and wonderful places to live very well in Spain. I would like to teach Spanish to English speakers who live here or near.
I am looking for English speakers too.

See you soon,
Cheers!

Hi everyone - my wife and I want to move for a year to Spain with our two boys aged 8 and 10.  We currently live in the United States.  My wife and I speak some Spanish. We are open to moving anywhere in Spain and would love any thoughts from people who have done this. Thanks so much everyone. Nikki and Dave

Hi Nikki and Dave, My wife Le and I moved from the Tampa Florida area just this past March to spend a year in Spain.  Our situation is slightly different as we are in our 50's / retired and our kids are mostly grown, our youngest is a Sophomore at College and will be joining us over the Summer.  We couldn't be happier with our decision.  We chose Spain for the good climate, the relatively low cost of living, and the opportunity to base here for travel across all of Europe.  We had previously been to Spain for a vacation and had visited Barcelona, Madrid and Granada.  For our relocation to Spain we chose Valencia for a number of reasons; we wanted to be on the Coast (for the scenery and climate), we wanted to have good access to a good rail and airport hub (Valencia is Spain's 3rd largest city), and what clinched it for Valencia (vs Barcelona, which we also considered, we preferred to learn Spanish as opposed to Catalonian, as Spanish is more universal).   We are residing in the Old Historical Center of the City, lots to do, great history, parks, museums, churches, restaurants, activities and festivals (including Las Fallas in March).  Good luck on your search, if we can be of any further assistance let us know.

Thanks so much for your thoughts. This is super helpful. We will definitely be in touch as we have any questions and would love to hear any other thoughts you have. Thanks again!

Thanks JeMorris - do you or anyone you know have information about the schools in Valencia? Was looking online but most of the info seems focused on older kids or people just interested in learning Spanish. Thanks again...

Not having grade school age children, that was not an area I had done any research on.  However, being the 3rd largest city in Valencia, I believe they would have programs for your children.  I think I recall passing a school that offered a bi-lingual education but don't recall where I saw that.  So not much help, so you may need to do some looking on-line.  Regards, Joe

Sounds great, my wife and I shall be in touch once we move to Lliria where we are currently in process of buying a house :)

Hi all,
We are Ali and Richard, and we shall be dipping our toe in the water, by renting an apartment in Estopona Jan to Mar 2019, we are really looking forward to it, the apartment is near the Marina, we thought we would try it for a couple of months first to see how we get on, we are 56 and 63, and have been talking about living somewhere warm for the past few years and feel that the time is right to give it ago. I'm sure in the next few months I will have loads of questions, that I hope someone will be able to answer for me, the main question at the moment is will we be able to receive UK tv, we have got WiFi at the apartment, the manager of the apartment has said we should be able to use our existing UK sky package, but we are not very tec savvy so don't really understand what we will require to enable us to do this, if there is someone who can help it would be great to hear from you

Hi all,

Glad to be here in preperation for my move to Almeria City in August, I´ve been in Spain for 4 years and have done the "Spanish Village" thing and am now ready to move back to city life. i hope once I get to Almeria I can meet up with some ex-pats and get some advice and good company.

Hi, hubby and I currently live in Cyprus, but wondering about a move to Spain. Feeling a bit out on a limb all this way from the UK, and flights quite expensive too, making it difficult to see family and friends very often. Been to a couple of areas in Spain in the past, but much more research needed before making the move. Need to bear the transition period for Brexit in mind, too. Looking forward to getting all the information we need before the time comes. We are retired and will be renting a property.

I am Abdo, 25, senior medical student. I am from Egypt. New member here.

I'm from the Bay Area but lived in Spain as a kid -- my mother's side of the family is from Jerez. I love it there and try to visit as often as possible (usually once every couple years). The goal is to find a job so I can move to Spain sometime soon (Barcelona, Sevilla, Madrid, anywhere really).

Anyways great to meet you all!

Hi all , we're an English family from Northamptonshire looking to move to the Alicante area in the near future.
We have two girls of 14 and 8 and two boys of 13 and 2 . I've joined this site to get information on schools and local life in the area and what to expect from the process of moving.
Obviously my older children are coming up to GCSE time soon so I'm considering private Education in an English school for them and a Spanish school for my younger two.
Has anyone else moved with teenagers to area , what school choices did you make ? I'd personally like to integrate all my children into Spanish schools but I'm wondering how that would effect the older children with their exams , has anyone made that choice ?

Love and light to you all can't wait to join you all out there :)

Hello everyone, we hope you are all having a nice weekend so far.
So, me and my wife are tired of living in Belgium and after going over a list of potential countries/areas for the better part of half a year, the canary islands came out on top. However, so far we only relied upon the information which we found on the internet and neither of us has ever been to the canary island but we are planning a scouting trip in October.

It would help us tremendously if we could get some intel here from people already living there, information on where it is the best to live when you move to the canary islands and have little to no knowledge of Spanish, yet.. we would like to rent at first for a year. Which jobs are easy to get and which skills are in demand? I am an electrical project manager with a lot of knowledge about both smart home systems and industrial automation and my wife is a master of manicure and she is amazingly good at it, she can fill a whole wall with all her certificates )).

It would help us a lot getting some answers on especially the area of where to live so we can focus our scouting trip there.

Thanks a lot in advance and have nice evening!

Bart & Tanya
