Cost of living 2018 in Jordan

I'm replying to the above, based on personal experience:

How much does it cost to rent an apartment or a house in Jordan?

I rent a fully-furnished 1-bedroom flat in Jabal Amman for 350 jd/month.

How much does it cost to buy an apartment or a house in Jordan?

I've never bought a flat or a house in Jordan.

How much do you pay on average for public transportation (bus, subway, train, tram, taxi)?

I set aside 15 jd/week.

How much do you pay for basic food items such as rice, bread, and pasta?

I buy the 5-kg Thai Royal Umbrella Rice from Carrefour at 6 jd. If I cook rice 3 times a week, it lasts me a month and a half.  If I cook it once a week, it can last for 3 months.

I haven't bought pasta in three years. Local sliced bread is around 0.75 jd.  Overseas brands start at around 1.5 jd.

What is your monthly budget for groceries?

Very rarely do I exceed 50 jd.

How much does it cost to see a doctor/dentist/physician/specialist in Jordan?

I've only ever been to the dentist. He put in a bridge after extracting four teeth. Each was 250 jd. Total: 1000 jd.

It's the third most expensive thing I've ever had to pay in Jordan but it's been worth it. It remains the most competent dental care I've ever got.


How much do you pay for health insurance per month?
I haven't any.

How much does childcare cost on average per month?

I haven't any children.

What is your child's schooling budget per month?

I said, I ain't got no kids😁

How much does it cost to fill up your car's fuel tank?

I don't have a car but taxi drivers tell me that they spend about 25 jd every day for a full tank.


How much do you pay for electricity/gas/water etc., per month?

Electricity bill is usually less than 10 jd during the warmer months and around 25 jd during winter. Current price for gas cylinders is 7 jd. During the warmer part of the year, a cylinder lasts 4 months. I cook everyday. Water is included in my rent: 350 jd/month.

How much do you pay for your internet and phone subscription?

Zain mobile package: Mish Tabee'aee Mix.  It's 9.50 jd/month (incl. tax):  3 GB internet bundle, 9000 on net minutes, 180 off-net minutes and 240 SMS.

Zain Home Broadband: 24 jd/month. 79 GB.

How much do you pay for your lunch pack on weekdays?

Lunch at home. If I have to eat something during the day while out and about, I usually opt for a shawarma (1 jd) or end up at Abu Jbara in 2nd Circle, where a simple, nutritious Arabic dish, with tea, costs less than 5 jd.

How much do you pay for an espresso coffee?

Haven't the slightest clue. I go for the mocha at Caffe Strada, in Rainbow St. It's 4 jd. I like to think it's the best mocha in the entire kingdom and it's NOT because I pay that much for it😁


How much do you pay for a cinema ticket?

This I remember though I've never been to the pictures.  At Prime Cinemas Abdali Mall, it's around 8 jd.

How much does a gym membership cost in Jordan?

To be honest, I can't afford membership at virtually all of Amman's gyms.  However, I will give you this bit:

The gym at 3rd Circle charges about 30 jd/month.   That's 1 jd/ day.

The gym where I usually swim (Hotel Toledo Gym, in Old Abdali) has a great offer: 60 jd for 12 visits within 3 months.  I swim once a week.  If you keep renewing every 3 months for an entire year, you eventually pay only 240 jd.

That price is a lot cheaper than those at other gyms where patrons are subject to hefty starting prices of around 390 jd and up.
