So I am going for the renewal and I wanted to see if the worst case scenario happened, could we still come back into the US to get our stuff and wrap up our affairs?

I94 is the driver. If you file for renewal four weeks prior to expiration of I94 that gives you up to fourth days from filing. Otherwise immediate departure with potential re-entry via ESTA/WVP or B1/B2.
