Keeping in touch while living in Tanzania

Hello everyone,

What are the best ways you've found for keeping in touch with friends and family back home while living in Tanzania? How frequently do you stay in touch with loved ones?

Are there local equivalents to common instant messaging and online video calling services that you prefer or are more widely used?

If there is a sizeable time difference, how do you manage this?

Do you make international phone calls from a landline or mobile phone from Tanzania? What do you think of the cost?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

There is only 1 ou 2 hours of difference from my home country, it is easy to manage. To keep in touch, I use Whatsapp or Skype.

Some mobile phone operators provide cheaper voice call bundles. For example if you pay TZS 5,000 (US$ 2.50) you get a bundle of 100 minutes that can be used for 1 week. But the countries one may call are limited (both mobile and landlines apply for US, and only landlines apply for UK).

Hi Priscila,

As for communication , Tanzania especially, Dar Es Salaam and many cities is excellent only that you might need to pay a bit more but not as compared to many countries in the world.
You can make international calls from land lines or mobile phones.
You can make video calls at very reasonable rates that includes WhatsApp  messages,
