I recently moved to JB from America. I work for an American company and travel extensively throughout Asia for my work. I have a work colleague also living in JB but he is a PR and married to a Singaporian woman. In other words, I am not employed by a Malaysian company. I need to open a bank account but need some kind of work or employment pass. What do you suggest I apply for and what do I need from my company. Will a letter from my company be sufficient to open a bank account?

You will need some sort of Malaysian immigration permit to open a bank account, as you are basically a tourist without one. Unless your US company incorporated a local branch or rep. office, you cannot get an employment pass here. EPs are linked to a company not an individual and applied for by the company.
