Legal / tax issues

Hi guys!

My name is Marieke, and I moved to Amsterdam a few years ago.

I was wondering, are there any other expats here experiencing legal and/or tax issues in The Netherlands? And if so, what kind of issues? Personally, find it hard that so many formal documentation is only available in Dutch.

Hi Marieke and welcome to the Forum.

When I had issues, I used a tax consultant where I lived; he sorted out my problem and submitted my tax return as well.

When I subsequently spoke to the Belastingdienst, they also offered an interview with an English speaking colleague who explained to me where the misunderstanding occurred.

Hi! Thanks for your reply :). What kind of issues were you dealing with?

My being unaware of the social taxes levied in Holland (so not part of the Double-taxation agreement between NL/UK), plus the Dutch tax year running from Jan > Dec (as opposed to the British system of Apr > Mar).  Once explained to me, it was clear I had to pay.  As the Dutch say, nobody likes paying taxes, but they can make it simpler; a bit of an oxymoron really. :)
