Online shopping in Kenya

Hello everyone,

Shopping online can be far more convenient and offer greater choice than going into shops, be it grocery shopping or retail.

Are there options for online shopping in Kenya? Which sites or apps do you use most frequently and are these local or international?

Are there particular products that are cheaper to buy online or that are perhaps not available in Kenya?

What is the delivery process like — is it easy to receive deliveries and what are the costs of shipping? Are there any taxes to pay upon receipt?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

There are companies that offer online shopping within Kenya, for example; Jumia, Hotpoint and so on.

Delivery for smaller items is usually via matatu, or courier.  Hotpoint, which sells small items and large kitchen appliances will for example offer a delivery, or 'pick up from store' option.  Delivery charges can apply, especially outside Nairobi.  As few Kenyans have a physical address (house number, street and so on), it may be necessary to collect from the couriers local office.

There are a couple of London based freight companies offering a fixed price per kilo delivery service for online shopping done in the UK (via Amazon for example).  The delivery address is set up as the  company office address, then the company ship the item(s) out to Kenya, where you can either collect from their offices in Nairobi, or have them delivered by courier (at an additional charge).  Its a very useful service for things that you cant easily obtain in Kenya and much cheaper than arranging the shipping yourself.  There are no additional duty charges when the goods arrive, which there usually are if you order from other companies.

Kenya has a good and expanding range of products.  Even so, you may well be unable to obtain a particular brand, which is where the above comes in useful.

Hi Priscilla,

Check out MallforAfrica.com here you get to shop from over 200 stores in the US and UK. You get your order delivered in 15 working days. On checkout whatever you pay for is what costs you...there are no hidden charges. The variety of items you can order is way beyond your imagination. As a matter of fact you can order anything from any online store in the US and UK through MallforAfrica.com.

Wonderful response! Thanks!  Would you kindly give name and contact information for the London based companies you mentioned in the response.

Thank you for this info!!!!  It looks awesome

You can shop with Amazon, or any retailer who does online shopping/delivery (you aren't limited by who the company deals with) and have it delivered to the company, who will ship it for you.  Arguably more flexible than companies such as 'MallforAfrica'.
