Registering a birth in Laos

Hello everyone,

Have you had to or are you going to register a birth in Laos? What was the experience like?

Who is required to register the birth, and where? Can it be either the mother or father?

What documents are usually required in Laos?

How long does the process to register a birth take? Are there any time limits in which the registration must be completed?

Did you register the birth with your home country and how did that process compare? Will your child be able to have dual nationality?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

Our youngest daughter was born in Thailand as we considered Lao hospitals then to not be of a good standard.
In Lao her birth was written into the family book and so she is Lao.
As I have Australian citizenship, we went through the process and got her Australian citizenship by descent.
She has Lao passport but not Australian.

Same as Stumpy. My kids are registered in the Family Book as well. It is quite easy to do.

Does Laos allow dual citizenship?

Laos does not allow dual citizenship. The child at age 18 has to make a decision as to which citizenship he/she wishes to have.
