Registering a birth in Costa Rica

Hello everyone,

Have you had to or are you going to register a birth in Costa Rica? What was the experience like?

Who is required to register the birth, and where? Can it be either the mother or father?

What documents are usually required in Costa Rica?

How long does the process to register a birth take? Are there any time limits in which the registration must be completed?

Did you register the birth with your home country and how did that process compare? Will your child be able to have dual nationality?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

Hi. In our case, we both went to the Registraduria (LIberia branch), it didn´t take too long to be waited on, three days later we had the child´s registration, got her a passport. Same thing at our country registered the child, got her registration, no need for a second passport, not yet. She´s 7 now. We did not find it difficult in either country. I am not sure if just one parent goes to register a child

First you must wait, and possibly wait some more after the birth for the birth certificate.

If the intent is to apply for Residency via this birth, know that you can't apply until you have a birth certificate for your child, however you can't work until you have received your cedulas which may be quick or it may take a year.
