HIV Medication

Hello. I am living and working in Budapest. I am HIV positive and I would like to get HIV drug through the health care system. Could you tell me please what is the process? the first step? how long does it take to get the drug? thank

So sorry to hear about your health issues.
Thankfully these days they seem to have this horrible issue under control.
We have known a few people who passed away in the 80's from this illness.
If you are working here I amuse you have health coverage through your job.
I would ask in the HR dept. about what medical is covered by the job.
You might wish to seek out a private doctor about this issue only because they may be allot more forth coming in quick care, not have you go through the whole long process of spending time in a family doctors office to be sent on to the next doc and so on.
God bless and take care.

Oh, yes, they should have all med's available here in Hungary just like any other country, the thing is actually get a script from a doc without having to see several "specialists" first.
If you can I would bring a supply of med with me to Hungary before moving here and going through the system.
Sometimes it does take awhile to get in touch with the right doc for your needs over here, it is hit or miss.

I suppose if your new job covers you with the National Health and you want to seek treatments that route, you would first see your family doctor for your district and they would send you on to the next specialist, usually a Infectious Disease specialist.
Just be sure to bring all information on what meds etc. you have already been on, any reports of treatments etc.
Just try to bring a supply of whatever medications you have with you because it can sometimes take a bit of time to get a appointment with a specialist through the national health, they are under staffed and wait times could be weeks or longer.
If you go the national health route, it is good to tip your specialist every now and again. Grease the machine so to say.I am seeing a specialist for my bone spur in my shoulder and last visit he refused a tip, this next visit I plan on giving a 20,000 note. It is slightly uncomfortable to tip but it really does help to keep them on your side and move the process along.
Good luck.

You do not mention if you have health insurance or not. This will be critical because HIV medication is notoriously expensive (gouging would be the correct term if it were interest rates). I believe the Hungarian formulary includes the drug Truvada for treatment. No other drug is on the list, but it is not a list I research regularly.  I would also think it would need to be either special ordered or you would need to go to a hospital specializing in infectious disease (Budapest: Saint Lazlo Hospital) to obtain the prescription.
There are only a few hundred cases of HIV in Hungary and they are certainly looking to keep that number minimized due to the cost of treatment (among other things).
"In 2015 in Hungary a total number of 271 newly diagnosed HIV positive cases were reported."
