Hello All; new here

Hello All!

I'm grateful for all the knowledge being shared here.  The truth is so different from popular perception many times, and it takes a good person to take the time to correct others so that they don't make mistakes.  Thank you!

I have finally achieved a completely stable and totally portable income.  But, I now have kids and pets!  I'm an old man :-)

I still have a serious travel bug - I've visited 31 countries.  What I hope to do is live someplace for at least 6 months, and really get into it.  I also wouldn't mind saving some money.  In NYC we pay so much for everything, and since I don't have my income tied to it, I realized, why the hell am I doing this?  I love NYC but it is very draining and I don't want to lose an opportunity to learn about other countries.

If I may, I'd like to ask where in the world is good to live financially right now but not unstable or unsafe for foreigners.  I know that is a super broad question, and I apologize, but I'm trying to generate ideas.

I've heard good things about Phillippines, Estonia, Czech Rep., Panama.  I have good acquaintances in many countries from my work, but they aren't the kind of friends you could call up and ask 1000 questions to.

I appreciate any responses.  I have searched the forums, and the web, but there is a lot of outright misinformation on the web.

I believe that I can contribute much in return, and of course if anyone has any questions, I'm glad to share info about NYC :-)

Dear Mega Gregg,

Welcome to the forums of expat.com.

In South America, consider....

1.  Department of Quindío, Colombia.

Even the  USA State Department gives this highlands section of Colombia (5,000 to 7,000 feet) its blessing for safe travel.  The city of Armenia has excellent shopping, varied dining, several large clinics and hospitals, and even a couple of casinos.  Mild weather year-round, but with enough rain to make this the heart of world-famous Colombian coffee country.

The Colombian peso has gone back over 3,000 to the US dollar, giving arriving Expats outstanding buying power.

2.  Cuenca, Ecuador.

A beautiful and relatively safe city, with even furnished rentals available at a small fraction of what you may be paying in Manhattan for unfurnished.  Ecuador is on the U.S. dollar.  Cool to mild weather, nothing severe.  Lots of Expat-oriented meetups and activities.

3.  Bariloche, Argentina.

City within a national parkland area.  Argentina's favorite place for skiing, senior class trips and four-season outdoor excursions.  Ski season is roughly May to August.  Summer high season is primarily December and January.

cccmedia in Medellín, Colombia

^^Thanks cccmedia!

I love Argentina and Ecuador.  Argentina is such a beautiful place both Buenos Aires and the countryside.  When I'm there I eat steak morning, noon, and night.   I have looked at apartments in Buenos Aires but haven't had the courage to look outside of the city, I will look on your recommendation, thank you!

I have only been to Quito, which is beautiful, but I have to be honest it is not as safe for foreigners.  I was last there in 2015.   I know there are a lot of expats in Cuenca - I read an article somewhere.

I haven't been to Colombia, just flown through, but everyone is telling me to go, it is apparently the new place to be.   I will start reading about it.

Again thanks for sharing your wisdom!
