Naturalisation and citizenship in Japan

Hello everyone,

What are the requirements for acquiring citizenship in Japan? For example, length of residence, language requirements, employment etc..

What formalities are involved in the process?

What is the policy on dual-citizenship in Japan? Do you have to give up your former nationality?

What are the advantages and benefits of acquiring Japanese citizenship, in your opinion?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

It depends on your circumstances and/or conditions. You must become a permanent resident first, which is only possible if you have lived in Japan for a year on some type of visa, unless you marry a Japanese citizen. But there are other ways too.

The guy above gave you a wrong information. It is not necessary to have permanent residence to apply for Japanese citizenship. You need to have lived in  Japan for 5 years apart from your period of education in Japan. You must be of a good conduct. You must have been paying taxes, pension, health insurance and so forth.
